BOOK REVIEW Three Books on What Being a Parent Really Means
August 24, 2024 print edition

Excerpt: “Ms. Lampert begins her book giddy with excitement about the prospect of using medical means to satisfy her desire for greater control over her life. Surprisingly, she doesn’t end up where she began. In addition to learning about the somewhat tortuous procedures women undergo in this quest, readers learn quite a bit about the author’s own loneliness and anxieties, as well as those of many of the women she interviews.”

“I’m a fan of anything that forces us to look at hard truths and not put off important questions,” said Natalie Lampert, who has written about egg freezing for a decade and whose book, “The Big Freeze,” is coming out in July. “What does my life look like? Where do kids fit in?”

“No technology is a panacea for confronting bigger questions about what we want,” she added. “But not having it is not a solution.”

Natalie Lampert, author of The Big Freeze (Ballantine, July 2024), dedicates her journalistic memoir about egg preservation to “all the people with ovaries confronting uncertainty and the consequential questions.” Egg freezing is enormously expensive, costing an average of $16,000 per cycle and rarely covered by insurance. “This financial bias is a major equity issue,” says Ballantine v-p and executive editor Susanna Porter. “Stigmatizing laws and entrenched social and cultural attitudes have made reproductive technologies difficult to access.”
